The edging comes from the paper texture. I only took the stamp, and postmark, but it needed to be the same tone to match perfectly, so I used the eyedropper to match the colourisation.
It never ocurred to me before - to get the perfect tone for a vintage photo - use an original vintage photo! Obvious - and all this time I have been messing round with sliders trying to copy the toning by eye...Duh!
